Sandy Cortez was born on October 13, 1989, into a Catholic family in the Bronx, New York City. She lived with her family in an apartment in Parkchester, the Bronx, till she was five years old when the family relocated to suburban Yorktown Heights.
The early disparity in educational options available to her and her siblings based on their separate zip codes had an impression on her when she was a child.
Later, she graduated from Yorktown High School in 2007. Sandy Ocasio-Cortez was known as “Sandy Ocasio” in high school and college. She attended Boston University after finishing high school.
