Stuart Chalmers OAM Death: Caves Beach Surf Lifesaving Club Member
Stuart Chalmers, Caves Beach Surf Lifesaving Club member, has passed away on Monday, April 25, 2022. Caves Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, has confirmed his death through an online post. The circumstances surrounding his death has not been made public at the time of this publication.
“It is with great sadness that Caves Beach SLSC informs you of the passing of life member Stuart “Stuey” Chalmers OAM, who passed away on 25th April 2022 surrounded by his loving family”, Caves Beach Surf Lifesaving Club announced.
“Stuart joined Caves Beach SLSC as a cadet in 1961 gaining his Bronze Medallion on 3rd December 1961. Stuart held numerous positions within Caves Beach SLSC including his role as President from 1983-89. Over his time at Caves Beach SLSC Stuart was also awarded Caves Beach SLSC Club Person of the Year in 1980-81, 1990-91, 1991-92 seasons.

“Stuart’s dedication to volunteering also extends to Hunter SLS where he sat on the Board of Examiners for many seasons. Stuart had a decorated history in the SLS movement, achieving life membership for both Caves Beach SLSC and Hunter SLS. Stuart was also awarded his 25yrs, 50yrs, and 60yrs Service Awards from Surf Life Saving Australia for his commitment to the movement.
“In 1996 the park to the north of Caves Beach SLSC was formally named the “Stuart Chalmers Park” acknowledging Stuart’s long involvement with the Surf Club and the surrounding grounds at Caves Beach. Stuart was also an active competitor at Caves Beach SLSC in the disciplines of Surf Boat Rowing and March Past. Stuart’s competition record at CBSLSC entails:
· Australia Championships – 1 x Gold, 2 x Silver, and 1 x Bronze
· State Championships – 1 x Gold

“Stuart was also part of the infamous 1962-63 Junior Boat Crew of Alan Sullivan, Robert Hobson, Gordon Richardson, Stuart Chalmers, and Sweep Ken Murray who won the Hunter Branch, SLSNSW, and SLSA Junior Surf Boat titles the same year the Caves Beach SLSC Open Men’s A Crew achieved the same honours.
“Stuart received many honours during his lifetime such as having a surf boat named after him at Caves Beach SLSC, gaining Life Membership of Belmont Stroke Recovery Club, and on the 5th May 2010 Stuart received an Order of Australia Medal for his commitment to the community and Surf Life Saving.
“Stuart’s contribution to our great club and the greater local community will live well beyond his passing and he will be dearly missed by all. Stuart who was always up for a morning cuppa at the club was a true friend to everyone he crossed paths with. He was a great clubman and a legend who lived for the maroon and white and all the integrity and mateship that it stands for. Caves Beach SLSC thoughts are with Sandra, and the entire Chalmers family during this difficult time.”
He will greatly be missed by many.
