Slowthai has made a public apology after pictures of him wearing swastika t-shirt at the Osheaga music festival in Montreal, Canada, on Saturday has gone viral.

Slowthai’s apology came after appearing on stage in a shirt depicting the word ‘DESTROY’ with a swastika underneath.

“I’m sorry to anyone who is offended by me wearing an anti-fascist/anti-regime T-shirt and the use of the symbol it represents,” he said. “I want you to know I stand firmly against antisemitism and fascism of any kind, something the T-shirt was meant to illustrate with the word ‘destroy’ above the symbol.”

Raised in Northampton, Slowthai rose to popularity in 2019 for his gritty and rough instrumentals and raw, politically charged lyrics, especially around Brexit and Theresa May’s tenure as British prime minister. He placed fourth in the BBC Sound of 2019 and followed up in the same year with his debut studio album, Nothing Great About Britain. The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize; at Slowthai’s 2019 Mercury Prize ceremony performance, he held a fake severed head of British prime minister Boris Johnson on stage, prompting controversy.
