Heron flying low across the lake
I have dusted off this shot of a grey heron in flight from the days when I took pictures of them almost exclusively. I developed two rules of thumb for shots like this: 1. No "bum" shots. The bird must be flying towards or past the camera, rather than away. This provides a much better image and rules out all those disturb-the-bird-and-snap-it-flying-off shots; and 2.
