Borrego began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma school, the University of San Diego, from 2001 to 2003. San Diego won the West Coast Conference Championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in the 2002–2003 season during his tenure.
Borrego began his professional basketball career with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003, first as an assistant video coordinator and then being elevated to assistant coach, following his coaching stint with the Toreros.
He was a member of two NBA championship teams with the Spurs in 2005 and 2007, before departing to join former Spurs assistant Monty Williams as the head coach of the New Orleans Hornets from 2010 to 2012.

The Charlotte Hornets announced on Friday that head coach James Borrego had been sacked.
The Hornets were eliminated from the play-in tournament for the second year in a row, falling 132-103 to the Atlanta Hawks on April 13. Charlotte, on the other hand, has improved by ten victories each of the previous three seasons under the 44-year-old, rising from 23-42 in 2019-20 to 33-39 in 2020-21 to 43-39 this season.
