Robertson began his snooker career at the age of 14, when he became the youngest player in Australian ranking history to break a century.
In the 1998/1999 season, Neil made his professional debut. He then advanced to the third qualifying round of the 1999 World Championship when he was 17 years old.
Robertson won the World Under-21 Snooker Championship in New Zealand in July 2003. This won him a spot as a wildcard on the WPBSA Main Tour.
He won the qualification competition for a wildcard spot at the 2004 Masters in 2003 but lost 2–6 in the first round to Jimmy White.
