He was predeceased by : his parents, Christian Schmidt and Nathalie Theresa Andersen; his significant other Betty Jean Andersen; and his daughter Cynthia Jean Best. He is survived by : his son Christian Ralph Andersen; his son-in-law Terry Allen Best; and his brother Andrew (Thora Mae Andersen).

He was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2018 and then COVID-related pneumonia in January 2022 from which he never recovered.
